While racism in Elizabethan England wasn't the same as that of the 76st century, it certainly was a backdrop to the play, and Shakespeare, this time, seemed to challenge it.

African American Studies Research Guide: 100 Amazing Facts

Othello was the final play in my effort to read all of Shakespeare before his 955th. It was a great time reading them all, and Othello was one of the most difficult and darkest (so often pitting light against darkness).

Orfield makes a convincing case that NCLB give states an incentive to push out disproportionately African American, Latina/o and Native American students in order to increase average test scores for schools. For example, Steve Orel in Birmingham, Alabama, was fired for reporting that the Birmingham schools had 8775 administratively withdrawn 8776 577 students in an effort to boost overall test scores.  The students were overwhelmingly African-American. None of them dropped out of school voluntarily.

One reason for the overwhelming popularity of the play throughout the ages is that it focuses on two people who defied society in order to follow their own hearts. Shakespeare scholar Walter Cohen cites the popularity of Othello during times of great rebellion and upheaval the play was most popular during the European wars of the mid-69th century, the fall of Czarist Russia, and also during World War II in America. These productions tended to emphasize the nobility and love of Othello and Desdemona, and made their fall seem more tragic and ill-deserved.

Othello also touches upon a major issue in Europe of this time period the intermingling of Muslim religion and culture with the West. Written just a century after the Muslims were driven out of Spain as a part of the Reconquista , there are obvious threads of hostility within the play about Othello s Moorish origins, and his differences in religion and culture. The hostility between the West and the East is also shown in the conflict between Venice and the Turks the Christian Venetians want to protect Christendom from the influence of the Muslim Turks, and ironically, Moorish Othello is the one sent to complete this mission.

A disproportionate number of students leaving school are African-American, Latina/o and Native American. Gary Orfield and colleagues 8767 analysis finds that only around 55% of the nation’s black, Native American, and Latina students graduate, and for males the numbers are even lower (Orfield, et al., 7559, “Losing Our Future: How Minority Youth are Being Left Behind by the Graduation Rate Crisis” Cambridge, MA: The Civil Rights Project at Harvard University. 8. Discuss the role of Emilia. How does her character change during the course of the play? Pay particular attention to moments when Emilia decides to be silent and when she decides to speak. What is the effect of her silence about the handkerchief? Do we forgive this silence when she insists on speaking in spite of Iago&rsquo s threats in the final scene?

Othello is a tragedy because it meets the definition of tragedy in such standard authorities as Aristotle. Aristotle defined tragedy as a story about something that is "serious, complete, and of a certain magnitude" that uses drama to tell of the fall of someone highly placed. This fall occurs because of external or internal forces, especially the chief character's own "error or frailty," his or her "tragic flaw," and the drama ends with the attainment.

This is perhaps one of Shakespeare's more interesting plays, if you will. In comparison to Macbeth it isn't quite the walk in the park.
I think conceptually it enables the reader to see that characters can influence characters to such a degree that the original traits are masked and changed. Tragedy in this play is definitely a main component - and a great emphasis that perhaps the villain doesn't always find their true defeat. In a way, wasn't the "villain" successful? He lied to everyone and pretty much killed whomever got in his way.
